Стоит отметить, что владевшая огромными чайными платанциями в Индии и на Цейлоне Великобритания вплоть до конца XIX века предпочитала «русский чай» из кипрея знаменитому своими вкусовыми качествами и популярному во многих странах мира индийскому чаю. Занявший почетное место в российской внешней торговле иван-чай с XVII по XIX века по объему экспорта существенно опережал такие традиционно пользующиеся спросом на мировом рынке русские товары как золото, мед и пеньку.
